After Henry van de Velde's move to Weimar in 1902 to become an artistic adviser to the Duke of Saxe-Weimar and then professor of the new school of applied arts, a number of his designs were executed by the court jewellers, Theodor Mller.
This comb was produced in Weimar by the factory of Theodor Mller. It has a gold openwork mount riveted to a tortoise-shell comb; the mount is hand-cut and pierced. In addition to the artist's monogram, the comb bears the maker's mark 'TM' conjoined for Theodor Mller. It was intended for export, suggested by the appearance of the French design registration mark. The van de Velde pieces, however, do not seem to have been made in large numbers.
